The Small Isles of Canna, Eigg, Muck, and Rum have always been connected by more than just their geography. Now, we're thrilled to introduce another connection: the brand-new Small Isles snorkel trail!
This exciting initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Small Isles Community Council and the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Together, with the support of local communities and businesses, they've developed a self-guided snorkel trail that showcases the very best snorkel spots across this breathtaking archipelago. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeller or a curious beginner, this trail is a gateway to exploring the wonders beneath Scotland’s seas.
Why Explore the Small Isles Snorkel Trail?
The Small Isles snorkel trail isn't just about exploring beautiful underwater landscapes—though you'll certainly do plenty of that. It's also about making the ocean more accessible to everyone, fostering a deeper connection with Scotland's incredible marine life, and supporting responsible eco-tourism across these islands.
When you take the plunge, you’re not just embarking on an adventure; you’re also contributing to the protection and appreciation of our precious marine ecosystems. The waters around the Small Isles are teeming with life and with each snorkel, you’ll gain a greater understanding of why these waters are worth protecting.
Celebrate the Launch!
To mark the launch of this exciting new trail, we’re hosting a series of fun and engaging activities on the Isle of Muck. Whether you’re on your own, with friends or bringing the whole family, there’s something for everyone. Join us at the beautiful Gallanach Bay on the Isle of Muck on the 31st August (2024) from 1-4pm and enjoy:
A Beach Picnic: Enjoy delicious teas, coffees, cakes, and plenty of good conversation by the sea. It’s the perfect way to relax and soak in the island atmosphere.
Snorkel Taster Sessions: Always wanted to try snorkelling but never had the chance? Now’s your moment! Eigg Guiding Co. will be on hand with wetsuits and snorkel gear for you to use. (£35 per person - 1.5hr guided tour).
Rockpool Ramble: Join Norah Barnes, the Isle of Eigg Ranger, on a journey of discovery through the island’s rockpools. You’ll be amazed at the marine treasures hiding in plain sight!
Seabird Stroll: Bring your binoculars for a gentle walk down the peninsula and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. It’s a peaceful way to connect with the natural beauty of the islands.
These activities are a fantastic way to get a taste of what the Small Isles have to offer, both above and below the water. It’s all made possible thanks to the generous support of the Porcupine Marine Natural History Society and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
There’s a whole world waiting for you beneath the waves—let’s explore it together!
